ATELIER EDITION
2022

The KPM Berlin archive contains treasures from the manufactory's more than 250-year history. Porcelain designs as well as painting templates and studies are guarded and meticulously maintained there. Over the centuries, artists and designers have left their footprints at KPM Berlin and continue to offer a cornucopia of inspiration to the present day.

The limited Atelier Edition 2022 is the result of reissuing, adapting and further developing some of these treasures from the KPM archive. KPM vase classics from different stylistic periods serve as the formal stage.

THE COLORFUL PLAY OF COLORS

The decors of the Atelier Edition 2022 were created in the decor department of KPM Berlin. This special painting discipline is one of four areas of work (flower painting, landscape painting, figural staffage) and is primarily concerned with graphic painting decors. The white objects must be viewed in great detail, with curves and shadows playing a decisive role in the decorative design. In addition to brushes, nibs are also used for delicate lines, letters and drawings. Sponges are used to dab paint over the entire surface of the meticulously masked areas. Finally, the KPM master painters place their personal signet, a handwritten mark, on the underside of the porcelain piece they have decorated.

THE SCENT OF MASTER PAINTING

When the elevator on the second floor of the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin opens its doors, a pleasant scent of orange blossom, lavender, aniseed and cloves catches the eye. In the KPM Master Paintings, the color pigments are mixed with the essential oils of the plants and thus made paintable. In the long hallway, you are greeted by a fresh bouquet of flowers and each door has a colorful porcelain sign inviting you into the studios. Here, flower painters sit next to decorative painters, figures and animal sculptures in the naturalistic garb of the figure painters are displayed in the showcases and a vase with a stately landscape painting awaits completion. It takes years of experience, a keen eye for detail and a great deal of talent to create editions such as the Atelier Edition 2022 at KPM Meistermalerei.

BANDS

The BÄNDER decor was inspired by Ernst Böhm from 1928. In typical style, Böhm developed the matching decor for a square vase he designed. For the Atelier Edition 2022, it was adapted to Friedlaender's HALLE vase in new color variations.

Behind the seemingly simple decoration is a great deal of detailed work. Two painting marks can be seen on the underside of each vase. Annette Rother and Stefanie Hammes produce the colored ribbons in blue, purple or green. The delicate golden rings are added by Claudia Felgendreher.

MÄANDER

The MÄANDER pattern was inspired by the block stripes pattern designed by Luise-Charlotte Koch in 1955. KPM head designer Thomas Wenzel, designer Sarah Bräuner and master painter Astrid Schulz developed the color scheme further and dynamically adapted the vertical color fonds to the objects.

The MÄANDER decor is characterized by the rhythmic arrangement of the surfaces on the organic vase shapes using vertically meandering black bands with different line widths. The graphic bands are contrasted with lively surfaces in pastel colors with a clearly recognizable brushstroke, which underline the handcrafted aspect of these special pieces. Together, the bands and surfaces create an irregular network that spans the body of the vase.

BLOCK STRIPS

In the BLOCKSTREIFEN decor, black background stripes contrast harmoniously with green-blue, rosewood and white colored stripes. Matt polished gold surfaces accentuate the color palette typical of the 1950s.

Antje Idziak has been working in the master painting department at KPM Berlin for 17 years. The accurate division of the surfaces on the bulbous porcelain surface is particularly challenging for the realization of the BLOCKSTREIFEN decor.

PALETTE 1956/2022

PALETTE 2022 is an adaptation for a new color harmony in which bright purple meets warm, muted pastel tones in yellow, grey-blue and olive.

CONTOUR

A closer look: a total of 20 vase bodies were broken down into two-dimensional surfaces for the KONTUR decor and reunited in an abstract way.

The white porcelain contrasts with rich black, cool gray and gray-blue. Master painter Solveig Uehr deliberately plays with the brush and its structure to create subtle color nuances that enliven the decor.
