 The limited Atelier Edition 2022 is the result of the new edition, adaptation and further development of some of these treasures from the KPM archive. KPM vase classics from different stylistic eras serve as the formal stage.

THE COLORFUL PLAY OF COLORS

The decors of the Atelier Edition 2022 were created in the decor area of ​​KPM Berlin. This special painting discipline is one of four areas of work (flower painting, landscape painting, figure staffage) and is primarily concerned with graphic painting decorations. The white objects must be viewed in detail; curves and shadows play a crucial role in the decor design. In addition to brushes, feathers are also used for delicate lines, letters and drawings. The previously meticulously masked areas are dabbed with paint over the entire surface using sponges. At the end, the KPM master painters place their personal signet, a handwritten symbol, on the underside of the porcelain piece they have decorated.

THE SCENT OF MASTER PAINTING

When the elevator opens its doors on the second floor of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin, a pleasant scent of orange blossoms, lavender, anise and cloves attracts your attention. In KPM master painting, the color pigments are mixed with the essential oils of the plants and thus made paintable. In the long hallway you are greeted by a fresh bouquet of flowers and every door invites you into the studios with a colorful porcelain sign. Here, flower painters sit next to decorative painters, in the display cases there are figures and animal sculptures in the naturalistic garb of the figure painters and a vase with stately landscape paintings is waiting to be completed. It takes years of experience, detailed observation skills and a lot of talent to create editions like the Atelier Edition 2022 in the KPM Master Paintings.

BANDS
The BÄNDER decor was inspired by Ernst Böhm from 1928. In typical fashion, Böhm developed the matching decor for a square vase he designed. For the Atelier Edition 2022, it was adapted to Friedlaender's HALLE vase in new color variations.

There is a lot of detailed work behind the seemingly simple decor. Two painting marks can be seen on each underside of the vases. Annette Rother and Stefanie Hammes make the colored ribbons in blue, purple or green. The delicate golden rings are complemented by Claudia Felgendreher.

MEANDER
The inspiration for the MÄANDER decor was the block stripes decor designed by Luise-Charlotte Koch in 1955. KPM chief designer Thomas Wenzel, designer Sarah Bräuner and master painter Astrid Schulz further developed the color scheme and dynamically adapted the vertical color funds to the objects.
What is characteristic of the MÄANDER decor is the rhythmic structure of the surfaces on the organic vase shapes using vertically meandering black bands with different line thicknesses. The graphic bands are contrasted with lively surfaces in pastel colors with clearly recognizable brushwork, which underline the manufactured aspect of the special pieces. Together, bands and surfaces create an irregular network that spans the body of the vase.

BLOCK STRIPS
In the BLOCK STRIPES decor, black background stripes contrast harmoniously with green-blue, rosewood-colored and white color stripes. Matt polished gold surfaces accentuate the color palette typical of the 1950s.
Antje Idziak has been working in the master painting department at KPM Berlin for 17 years. When implementing the BLOCK STRIPES decor, the accurate division of the areas on the bulbous porcelain surface is particularly challenging.

PALLET 1956/2022
PALETTE 2022 is an adaptation for a new color harmony in which bright purple meets warm, muted pastel tones in yellow, gray-blue and olive.
The deputy painting director Susanne Bauch-Markowski began her training as a porcelain painter at KPM Berlin in 1983.

CONTOUR
Look carefully: a total of 20 vase bodies were broken down into two-dimensional surfaces for the KONTUR decor and then abstractly reunited.
Rich black, cool gray and gray-blue contrast with the white porcelain. Master painter Solveig Uehr consciously plays with the brush and its structure, creating subtle color nuances that enliven the decor.
