Vase HALLE 1

In 1931, Marguerite Friedlaender designed the HALLE, an icon of the Bauhaus tradition in terms of its proportions, lines and simple curves. However, the Jewish designer was initially denied the recognition she deserved with the rise of National Socialism: Friedlaender was removed from the records as the designer of the product, her design was temporarily nameless and only many years later was it proudly marketed again under her name by the Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur Berlin.

History

designer: Marguerite Friedlaender-Wildenhain year: 1930 material: Porzellan

The HALLE vase group, created by Marguerite Friedlaender-Wildenhain in 1930 during the Bauhaus's heyday, represents the ceramic craftsmanship tradition of the Bauhaus years. Characteristic of the designer's early work are its clear lines, strict proportions, and the harmonious fusion of sphere and cone in the shape of the vase. Its individual components are balanced and have become unmistakable design features of the Bauhaus era. Photo: © Archiv Burg Giebichenstein – Kunsthochschule Halle

Product description

In 1931, Marguerite Friedlaender designed the HALLE, an icon of the Bauhaus tradition in terms of its proportions, lines and simple curves. However, the Jewish designer was initially denied the recognition she deserved with the rise of National Socialism: Friedlaender was removed from the records as the designer of the product, her design was temporarily nameless and only many years later resold with great pride under her name by the Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur Berlin. Over 90 years later, the Berlin artist Rona Kobel has now used it to create objects with political impact. The "Freedoom" vase tells of the fragility of freedom in powdery pastel shades and neo-baroque bows, while the "CouRAGE" vase addresses the necessary anger in the courage to change. The most subtle highlight of the remake, however, can be found on the bases or in the necks of the artworks, where Kobel helps Friedlaender to make a quiet comeback: the designer's crossed-out signature is re-emphasized and made effective again by dots placed decisively underneath.

“Freedoom” is available in 5 colors and is limited to 9 pieces each. The sugary-sweet effect of the objects lasts only a short moment until one becomes aware of the desperate eyes in the double O - which in the mint green version are even pierced and can therefore cry. The artist has completed each unique piece by hand.
