History

Client: Peter von Biron, Duke of Kurland Year: 1790 Material: Porcelain

Commissioned by Peter von Biron, Duke of Kurland, a series in a strictly neoclassical style was created in Berlin around 1790 in keeping with the new aesthetic—a series that would go on to become an icon of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin: KURLAND. Its design pays homage to the ideals and forms of the ancient world. Simplicity, austerity, and symmetry come together to form an elegant, cohesive, and timeless design—arguably the most significant porcelain collection of the Classical period.

The fragrance of the manufactory between heritage and today

The Royal Porcelain Manufactory takes you on an olfactory journey behind the scenes of the traditional walls that have been guarding the secrets of Berlin porcelain production since 1763. During the elaborate, meticulously perfected transformation of three natural raw materials - kaolin, feldspar and quartz - into fine objects for the table and home, numerous special fragrances surround the experts. The special fragrance bouquet of Berlin porcelain can be experienced particularly in the traditional manufactory's master paintings: skilled master painters mix powdery colour pigments with natural oils such as lavender, aniseed and orange and bring to life an aromatic fragrance composition that lets the senses wander alongside detailed flower paintings, landscapes, vedute and individualizations.

The scent of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin now fills your own cozy home as a scented candle, bringing the fascinating charm of its place of origin. Captured in a porcelain vessel from the KURLAND collection (1790), the fresh fragrance composition Edition WEISS tells the story of the porcelain manufactory—which has been in existence for over 250 years—blending heritage with modernity.
