History

Client: Peter von Biron, Duke of Kurland Year: 1790 Material: Porcelain

Commissioned by Peter von Biron, Duke of Kurland, a series in a strictly neoclassical style was created in Berlin around 1790 in keeping with the new aesthetic—a series that would go on to become an icon of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin: KURLAND. Its design pays homage to the ideals and forms of the ancient world. Simplicity, austerity, and symmetry come together to form an elegant, cohesive, and timeless design—arguably the most significant porcelain collection of the Classical period.

Product description

With the KURLAND Noir edition, Jörg Woltmann Noir his 20th anniversary as owner of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin. This special reissue of the KURLAND classic encapsulates the guiding principle under which the KPM owner has led the manufactory since taking it over in 2006: to preserve a time-honored craft, gently guide it into the modern era, and strengthen it for the future.

The KURLAND collection, the epitome of artisanal perfection and timeless elegance since 1790, remains one of KPM Berlin’s bestsellers to this day and is Jörg Woltmann’s personal favorite. With the KURLAND Noir Edition, this classic Noir now Noir in a contemporary light. The neoclassical KURLAND relief, featuring egg-and-dart molding and drapery, takes on a modern, multifaceted expressiveness in deep black.

The glaze was developed specifically in the KPM Berlin laboratory. It consists of 70 percent of the tried-and-true transparent glaze and 30 percent black pigments—this ensures that the exceptional durability of the classic white glaze is fully preserved, and KURLAND Noir also scratch-resistant and dishwasher-safe.

Each piece is sprayed by hand on both sides, with the base and underside deliberately left white, before the porcelain is fired at 1,250 degrees Celsius. In this high-temperature firing process, pigments and glaze merge to create a deep, velvety matte surface with exceptional visual depth.

The manufactory’s traditional emblem—the royal scepter and orb—also appears in black, offering a subtle nod to the heritage and authenticity of each individual piece. The KURLAND Noir Edition Noir classical design with modern material aesthetics, making it synonymous with the innovative spirit of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin: tradition in perfect transformation.
