Commissioned by Peter von Biron, Duke of Kurland, a series in strict classical form, following the new aesthetic, was created in Berlin around 1790, which was to become an icon of the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin: KURLAND. Its form is a tribute to the ideals and design of the ancient world. Objectivity, austerity and symmetry combine to create a noble, self-contained and timeless form – probably the most important porcelain collection of Classicism.

With the KURLAND Noir edition, Jörg WoltmannNoir his 20th anniversary as owner of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin. This special new edition of KURLAND sums up the motto under which the KPM owner has been running the manufactory since taking it over in 2006: to preserve a craft steeped in tradition, carefully guide it into the modern age, and strengthen it for the future.
The KURLAND , synonymous with perfect craftsmanship and timeless elegance since 1790, remains one of KPM Berlin's bestsellers to this day and is Jörg Woltmann's personal favorite. With the KURLAND Noir edition, consisting of two to-go cups, two bowls, two dessert plates, and two large dinner plates, this classic is now being presented in a contemporary light. The classic KURLAND of egg sticks and cloth hangings takes on a modern, multi-layered expressiveness in deep black.
The glaze was specially developed in the KPM Berlin laboratory. It consists of 70 percent of the proven transparent glaze and 30 percent black color pigments – thus, the excellent resistance of the classic white glaze is fully retained and KURLAND Noir also scratch-resistant and dishwasher-safe.
Each piece is sprayed by hand on both sides, with the base and underside deliberately left white, before the porcelain is fired at 1,250 degrees Celsius. In this high-temperature firing process, pigments and glaze merge to create a deep, velvety matte surface with exceptional visual depth.
The manufacturer's traditional trademark – the royal scepter and orb – also appears in black, making a subtle reference to the origin and authenticity of each individual piece. The KURLAND Noir editionNoir classicist design with modern material aesthetics, thus becoming synonymous with the innovative power of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin: tradition in perfect transformation.
