History

Client: Peter von Biron, Duke of Kurland Year: 1790 Material: Porcelain

Commissioned by Peter von Biron, Duke of Kurland, a series in a strictly neoclassical style was created in Berlin around 1790 in keeping with the new aesthetic—a series that would go on to become an icon of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin: KURLAND. Its design pays homage to the ideals and forms of the ancient world. Simplicity, austerity, and symmetry come together to form an elegant, cohesive, and timeless design—arguably the most significant porcelain collection of the Classical period.

Product description

Colorful parrot designs from the KPM archive, created by master painters of earlier generations, adorn plates and mugs from the KURLAND collection as part of this year’s Heritage Edition Parrot series.

With great virtuosity and a light, fluid brushstroke, the master painters at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin breathe a fascinating vitality into four colorfully plumed companions. A bright-red macaw, a green-cheeked parrot, a yellow-crested cockatoo, and a rainbow lory take flight across classics from the KURLAND Collection, undoubtedly captivating viewers with the magnificence of nature. The inspiration for these pieces came from gouaches that the porcelain painters created based on the illustrations in an ornithological work and which have been preserved in the KPM archive to this day. In keeping with the tradition of 18th-century porcelain painting, the repertoire of motifs at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin included not only floral compositions, landscapes, and figurative scenes but also impressive depictions of animals.  The KURLAND Heritage Edition Parrots presents a unique selection of exceptional bird depictions—some sitting alone on a branch, others as details from the original drawing—highlighting the multifaceted attention to detail characteristic of KPM’s masterful painting.

In the swarm, the four colorful companions come together again in a five-part wall Plates set. Limited to a total of 100 sets, which are exclusively reserved for members of the WEISS customer club, the scarlet macaw, green-winged macaw, yellow-crested cockatoo and rainbow lorikeet, sometimes sitting individually on a branch, or as an excerpt from the original drawing, emphasize the multifaceted attention to detail of KPM master painting.
