The “Sous le Soleil” collection combines the craftsmanship of KPM Berlin with the artistic vision of Johanna Dumet. On Enzo Mari’s iconic BERLIN dinner plate, the French artist depicts female nude motifs—hand-painted, free-form, and without any specific attribution.
Dumet’s visual language deliberately breaks away from the male gaze and creates spaces for self-determination—an attitude that Paula Modersohn-Becker had already articulated in 1906 in her “Self-Portrait on the 6th Wedding Anniversary.” At the same time, the edition builds a bridge to the porcelain figurines of KPM Berlin: Schadow’sPrinzessinnengruppe,” Tuaillon’s “Amazon on Horseback,” and Amberg’s “Europa on the Bull.” All three represented a new, physically assertive portrayal of femininity—a legacy that Dumet continues in a simplified, two-dimensional form.
During a two-month residency at the KPM Master Painters’ Studio, each motif was created by hand—directly on the porcelain of the BERLIN series, launched in 1996. No two plates are alike: each set is truly one-of-a-kind. The plates are more than just a canvas for a work of art; they invite people to dine together and turn every meal into a special moment. In this way, aesthetics, enjoyment, and togetherness merge into a quiet, elegant utopia.
