To mark the 200th anniversary of Museum Island, the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin is reissuing the figure Amazon on horseback based on the bronze sculpture by Louis Tuaillon, which stands in the Colonnade Courtyard of Museum Island.
The sculpture with the original name Amazon on Horseback by the Berlin artist Louis Tuaillon was created in Rome between 1890 and 1895. The sculpture, originally around 85 centimetres high, was exhibited at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1895 and purchased for the National Gallery in 1896. It is considered the artist's major work.
Kaiser Wilhelm II. himself commissioned a larger-than-life version of the Amazon, which still stands on Museum Island today. This makes it one of only three original works of art from the colonnade courtyard that still exist today. Another larger-than-life cast of the statue also stands in Berlin's Tiergarten, not far from today's factory site.
The porcelain figure, which is assembled from 22 individual parts with the utmost precision craftsmanship, first appeared at KPM in 1924, but was never part of KPM's regular range. This makes this complex figure a veritable collector's item, which in the Amazon on Horseback, Edition Royal Marbre Noir is then painted by hand in such a technically demanding manner that the appearance of genuine black marble is created.
The Amazone on Horseback Edition Royal Marbre Noir is strictly limited to 10 pieces.
