The to-go cup as a cultural object: A bear campaigns against the throwaway culture
For the launch of the KPM+ Edition WINNICOTT, the artist Tatjana Doll moved her studio as a replica into the KPM Pavilion on Kurfürstendamm. We spoke to her about the KPM+ cooperation and the unusual installation on the occasion of the 20th Gallery Weekend.
From the studio floor to the KPM to-go cup
For your collaboration with KPM Berlin, you have transferred a bear motif that is laid out over a large area on the floor of your studio onto our to-go cup. How did this unusual floor come about?
First I laid out a black floor to catch the droplets. The droplets looked like stars in space. The universe looked a bit lonely to me, so I created the seven teddy bears.
The bear as a symbol of friendship & family
What other significance does the bear motif have for you?
There is the Berlin Bear. My children's grandfather, who was an antiques dealer and psychoanalyst, also had a basket in which his family sat: all bears, which he took everywhere with him! I painted his family in a basket and he loved it.
You like to explore cultural connections in your paintings. What is your association with KPM porcelain?
It is porcelain as beautiful as in the royal family, hand-made white gold, painted. Luxury. Therefore, the mug is also available in a Series painted on small canvases to give the cup the aura of a cultural cup.
The to-go cup gets its counterpart on the canvas and thus becomes a cultural object
The KPM to-go cup sets an example against the throwaway culture
What else does this merger stand for?
Drinking coffee while walking is capitalism in full. Global, therefore a mix of nations and thus also stands for diversity. Fusion takes responsibility for the environment, it is against throwing things away. The bear on the floor as a motif supports this wish.
You are known for your large-format works. What challenges did you face in transporting your paintings to such a small space?
I subsequently painted the cup from different perspectives to understand the challenge: transference, projection.
Your daughter presents the Winnicott KPM to-go cup. Your son made a video about it. Why is this edition suitable for cross-generational collaboration?
The cup is an offer for young people to perceive my generation in their throwaway culture.
