The to-go cup as a cultural object: a bear stands up against the throwaway culture
For the launch of the KPM+ Edition WINNICOTT, artist Tatjana Doll has moved her studio into the KPM Pavilion on Kurfürstendamm as a replica. We spoke to her about the KPM+ cooperation and the unusual installation on the occasion of the 20th Gallery Weekend.
From the studio floor to the KPM To-go cup
For the cooperation with KPM Berlin, you have transported a bear motif, which is laid out over a large area on the floor of your studio, onto our to-go mug. How did this unusual floor come about?
First I laid out a black base to catch the droplets. The droplets looked like stars in space. The universe looked a bit lonely to me, so I created the seven teddies.
The bear as a symbol of friendship & family
What else does the bear motif mean to you?
There is the Berlin bear. My children's grandfather, who was an antiquarian bookseller and psychoanalyst, also had a basket with his family in it: all bears, he took them everywhere with him! I drew him his family in the basket and he thought it was great.
With your paintings, you like to pose the question of cultural contexts. What is your association with KPM porcelain?
It is porcelain as beautiful as in royalty, handmade white gold, painted. Luxury. That's why the mug is also available in a series painted on small canvases to give the mug the aura of a cultural mug.
The to-go cup gets its counterpart on the screen and thus becomes a cultural object
The KPM To-go mug sets an example against the throwaway culture
What else does this merger stand for?
Drinking coffee on the go is capitalism refueled. Global, therefore a mix of nations and thus also stands for diversity. Fusion takes responsibility for the environment, it is against throwing things away. The bear on the floor as a motif supports this desire.
You are known for your large-format works. What challenges did you face in transporting your painting onto such a small surface?
I subsequently painted the cup from different perspectives in order to understand the challenge: Transfer, projection.
Her daughter presents the Winnicott KPM To-go mug. Your son has made a video about it. Why does this edition lend itself to an intergenerational collaboration?
The cup is an offer for young people to perceive my generation in its throwaway culture.
