Baskets and bowls have a long tradition in the history of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin. Their uniqueness lies in the details—the delicate openwork basket weave is crafted by hand, and the baskets are then decorated with elaborate hand-painted designs and exquisitely engraved gold ornamentation.
With 3,000 individual, hand-applied cuts, the “ Schinkel basket ” ranks among the most magnificent masterpieces of its kind. The Neoclassical basket, also known as the “fruit basket en vase,” was designed in 1820 based on a sketch by Karl Frederick Schinkel, commissioned by the Prussian King Frederick Wilhelm III—as a wedding gift for his daughter Charlotte, who later became Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna. The Royal House of Hanover also owns four Schinkel baskets, which were crafted around 1820.
