Baskets and bowls have a long tradition in the manufactory history of the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin. Their special feature lies in the detail - the filigree openwork basketwork is worked by hand and the baskets are then decorated with elaborate hand-painted and exquisitely engraved gold ornaments.
With 3,000 individual cuts made by hand, the Schinkel basket is one of the most magnificent masterpieces of its kind. The classicist basket, also known as a 'fruit basket en vase', was designed by Karl Frederick Schinkel in 1820 on behalf of the Prussian King Frederick Wilhelm III as a wedding gift for his daughter Charlotte, who later became Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna. There are also four Schinkel baskets in the Royal House of Hanover, which were made around 1820.
