Master of Form: Enzo Mari and the KPM Berlin

MASTERS OF FORM: ENZO MARI AND THE KPM BERLIN

Design is not just about aesthetics; it’s also about conveying knowledge. Enzo Mari places this philosophy at the heart of his work. We take a closer look at the artist’s body of work, which includes pieces created for the “ KPM Berlin .” Among other things, Mari designed the famous, functional “BERLIN” tableware set.

Star designer, professor & object artist

After graduating in art and literature from the Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, the designer, born in 1932, joined the "Nuove Tendenze" artists' group. It was his furniture and product designs that made him an internationally recognized designer. In the 1970s, he accepted the presidency of the Italian Society of Design and some time later held an honorary professorship at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg. In his work, he repeatedly addressed questions of visual perception. His style is characterized by a great flair for simple solutions, clear forms and, of course, the practicality of everyday objects.

This is also reflected in his collaboration with KPM. In 1994, the artist designed the so-called Mari vase, whose slender, vertically rising form and minimalist design set new standards. Two years later, he created the BERLIN dinner service, which won the iF Design Award and whose individual components can be combined not only with each other but also with other series - making it as multifaceted as the city itself!
