KPM+ Tatjana Doll x Galerie Droste: Edition WINNICOTT

For your collaboration with KPM Berlin , you transferred a bear motif—which was laid out over a large area on the floor of your studio—onto our “To-go” cup . How did this extraordinary floor design come about?

First I laid out a black base to catch the droplets. The droplets looked like stars in space. The universe looked a bit lonely to me, so I created the seven teddies.

What else does the bear motif mean to you?

There’s the Berlin Bear. Also, my children’s grandfather—he was an antiquarian and a psychoanalyst—had a basket with his family inside: all bears, and he took them everywhere with him! I painted his family in the basket for him, and he thought it was great.

With your paintings, you like to pose the question of cultural contexts. What is your association with KPM porcelain?

It is porcelain as beautiful as that found in the royal household—handcrafted “white gold,” hand-painted. Luxury. That is why the “ cup ” is also available in a series of paintings on small canvases, designed to give the “ cup ” the aura of a cultural mug.

The to-go cup gets its counterpart on the big screen and thus becomes a cultural object

What else does this merger stand for?

Drinking coffee on the go is capitalism refueled. Global, therefore a mix of nations and thus also stands for diversity. Fusion takes responsibility for the environment, it is against throwing things away. The bear on the floor as a motif supports this desire.

You are known for your large-format works. What challenges did you face in transporting your painting onto such a small surface?

I subsequently painted the cup from different perspectives in order to understand the challenge: Transmission, projection.

Your daughter is presenting the Winnicott KPM To-go cup. Your son made a video about it. Why is this edition a good fit for a cross-generational collaboration?

The cup is an opportunity for young people to experience my generation in its throwaway culture.
